Jayne was enrolled in a course called “Improving Confidence & Motivation When Applying for Work”, delivered via video-conference. When introducing themselves to the group, Jayne became visibly upset and turned their camera off, prompting a quick welfare call. Jayne subsequently advised they had been out of work for four years, following a brain stem stroke. They were uncertain about what type of work they were physically capable of.
Challenges:
Brain stem stroke
Tinnitus
Severe obstructive sleep apnoea
Low energy
Trouble staying on track/keeping organised
Low self-confidence
Support Provided:
Focus on planning and organisation
Encouragement to do things “outside their comfort zone”
Encouraged to interact with group
Breathing exercises to address nerves
Outcome:
After the course, Jayne said they felt more organised and that they were using notes to help as a reminder to complete tasks. They reported having more energy as a result of doing things out of their comfort zone and getting up before 9am each day. Jayne subsequently enrolled in another course with the same teacher, with whom they had a good rapport. Jayne said the focus on preparing well in advance of any job interviews (including planning the route to the interview and getting a good night’s sleep) had greatly improved their confidence.
